As the price of gasoline rises we have all become more aware of how much we spend on filling up the tank. Here are a few things you can do to not only save some money by consuming less gasoline but also lower your environmental impact.
- Learn how to properly start your vehicle
Fuel-injected vehicles do not need to have the gas pedal pumped when starting the vehicle. - Avoid start-and-stop driving
Save quick acceleration or sudden braking for when your life is in danger. Avoid tailgating because it requires more braking and accelerating. - Use cruise control when highway driving
Cruise control will regulate the amount of gasoline used by only using what the vehicle needs to maintain a constant speed. - Slow down
Improve your fuel efficiency by about 15% by driving at 65 mph rather than 75 mph, so follow speed limits. - Avoid idling
It uses more gas than stopping and re-starting your vehicle. Avoid drive-throughs by parking and going inside. - Remove roof racks
Put items inside the vehicle rather than on roof racks to reduce drag and take them off when not in use. - Avoid rough roads
Smooth road surfaces can reduce fuel consumption. - Avoid riding your brake
Having one foot on your brake and one on the gas pedal will consume much more gas. - Pay attention when buying gasoline
Avoid buying gas when the gas truck is there filling the gas station’s tanks. When the gasoline is flowing down to the holding tank the gas is infused with a lot of oxygen and reflects in the amount of gas you have purchased. - Buy gas during the coolest part of the day
Gasoline vaporises easily especially on a hot day. Ever notice the fumes coming out of your tank while filling your tank? You’re still paying for those fumes.

Great tips. I would add that purchasing a hybrid car would ultimately save on gas.
I agree. Hybrid cars are really good on gas. In fact some states offer a tax credit for purchasing and driving a hybrid car.
